First Snow

It's mid October, and it's snowing! We certainly weren't expecting this so early!

Meet the Fall Crops!

It's funny ... as soon as the weather changed, I didn't care any more about tomatoes or peppers or eggplants ... just give me leafy greens!!! And good thing, because although we do still have peppers and eggplants, the greens and their relatives are definitely the stars of the farm right now.

The kale has been ready for weeks, and it's enormous and tender and delicious. All kinds of little Asian greens and spicy mustards and lettuces are ready, and the Chinese cabbages are so big that you have to give them a big hug just to hold them.

Broccoli is just started to form heads, and the cauliflower will be just behind it. And then, if the frost holds off late enough (please, please, please!) we'll have cabbages and brussels sprouts as well.

Hilltop Hanover Open Farm Day

This Saturday, September 26, from 10 - 4, Hilltop Hanover is throwing its gates wide open and welcoming the public for Open Farm Day. As usual for Saturdays, Pick Your Own and the farm stand will both be open, but there's going to be all kinds of other good stuff going on, too.

Tours of the farm will be leaving every hour from our main office, Building C, and will be led by either our farm manager or head farmer. You'll learn some history of the farm (it's over 200 years old!) and see the demonstration gardens, crop fields, and the farm's "green" innovations.

From 10 -noon Brian will be leading a hike of our trails - if you'd like to join in, meet up in front of the main office. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes and bring some water!

Also from 10 - noon, bring the kids for a couple hours of craftiness. Our craft teacher, Danielle, will be making books with the kids that they can decorate and fill up with drawings of the farm or leaves that they collect. (There's a $5 materials fee and please call 914-962-2368 to register.)

And finally, if you want to learn how to compost with worms, you can join me from 1 - 3 in Barn F and I'll show you how! (There's a $10 fee for this one, also call to register.)

More Tomatoes!

Well, we haven't yet had the disaster we expected. It hasn't been pretty, and we've lost far more than half of our tomato plants to blight, but we pulled in a harvest last week and it looks like we've got another on the way. We've got about eight or so surviving varieties that will be on sale on Saturday mornings at our U-Pick garden table!

And, yes, all these pictures are from this summer!!!
